Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly serves seniors 60 and over and on average, in their 80s. Many have become isolated as they have outlived all their family members and many friends. Most no longer drive. Most live alone or in an assisted living or long-term care facility. Some just need opportunities for social activities and an occasional good time. Some become mildly depressed after losing a loved one or undergoing a significant life change because of health changes or limited mobility.
LBFE volunteers help meet the social, practical and emotional needs of these seniors in many ways. Visiting volunteers are matched one-to-one with seniors, regularly visiting them in their homes and providing friendly companionship.
Drivers escort seniors to holiday dinners, birthday and other social luncheons and events, crafting or game-playing groups and sports events joining in conversation over a meal or snacks. Friendships form between seniors and volunteers as people get to know one another.
Volunteer peer counselors are good listeners interested in helping other seniors who are dealing with mild to moderate depression, anxiety, grief/loss, or adjustment difficulties. Peer counselors attend a specialized training program before being matched, and have ongoing training and supervision opportunities throughout the year. Peer counselors visit two or three seniors over the course of a one-year commitment.
Currently, one of the greatest volunteer needs is for peer counselors. Training for this program begins in May. LBFE seniors could benefit greatly from your generous donation of time and service.
