Adult Day Service Centers

Adult Day Centers provide a community-based service option for thousands of people throughout Minnesota. Structured, comprehensive programs provide a variety of health, social and related support services for adults who want access to services during any part of a day, but less than twenty-four hour care as in a residential facility.

What do they do?

The centers provide a range of activities and services. Skilled nursing, health monitoring, rehabilitation, care planning, coordination of care and assistance with medications, and personal care are provided in settings that also offer music, discussion, outings, crafts, exercise groups, a nutritious meal, snacks and more.

How do seniors benefit?

Day centers allow many seniors the opportunity to continue to live in their homes. Day centers successfully separate housing from services, and avoid the necessity of moving out of one's neighborhood and into a facility just to access daytime support. Adult Day Services can improve or maintain health, independence, and ultimately, quality of life.

How do caregivers benefit?

Caregivers who are employed full or part-time can go to work knowing their loved one is safe and well cared for in an Adult Day Center. Day services also provide "time off" for a care-giving friend or relative. Many programs specialize in care for those with Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, strokes and other limitations.

What about the costs?

Adult day program fees average $65 a day. The cost is approximately one-third of the cost of a home health aide. Most services have contracts with county social service programs that may cover the costs for those unable to pay. In addition, some Long-Term Care insurance policies also authorize payment.
