Medigap policies (Basic, Extended Basic and new H, I and J policies)

Two types of Medigap policies are available in Minnesota: Basic (optional riders may be added) and Extended Basic, which include all of the Basic riders. Note: In many states, ten policy options, A through J, are available. Nevertheless, Minnesota's Medigap policies equal or exceed national standards. The policies cover gaps in Original Medicare and some also have benefits that Original Medicare does not cover, for example, health care while traveling outside the U.S.

Medigap policies do not require you to receive services from a specified network of providers, but more paperwork may be needed. When shopping for one of these policies, you need only to compare costs and reliability of the insurance company. Minimum benefit levels are mandated by Minnesota law and do not differ among companies, although some companies may offer higher benefit levels of certain state-mandated coverage. Call the company to ask about coverage of non-standard items. None of the policies cover prescription drugs.
