In 2004, Families USA, a national organization for health care consumers, produced a video, narrated by Walter Cronkite, on Medicare Part D. It was shown at retiree meetings, senior centers and many places where seniors would meet. It explained Part D law, its shortcomings (including the infamous “donut hole”), the absence of effective cost containment and leading health care experts offered their opinions. Maybe you had the opportunity to see this video. Issues, articles and TV news stories continue about Medicare Part D. It is a topic that arises often. Families USA knows issues with Medicare Part D have continued even as plans are operating across the country. This organization has produced a second video, which was also be narrated by Cronkite, titled “The Problems with the Medicare Drug Program - and How to Fix Them,” available at the state Federation office. The second video focuses on experiences seniors had in trying to choose the Part D plan which was right for them. It relates confusions that caused thousands of seniors to miss the sign-up deadline. The video lays out ways to improve the Part D benefit, such as letting Medicare bargain directly with drug companies for the lowest prices. If you have the opportunity to view this video, please do. It may provide an opening for conversation on the Part D issue and an opportunity to mobilize seniors and get Congress to take action. |
