Can we, members of the Minnesota Senior Federation, do a better job of promoting our wonderful organization? I was recently at a funeral, talking with some of my friends and an older gentleman came up to us. I thought I recognized him and my friends said, "You know the doctor." I said, "Yes I do." I was then introduced to the doctor and it was stated that I was president of the Minnesota Senior Federation. The doctor looked at me and said. "Maybe you could bring some of your meetings and workshops up here to the Iron Range." I then informed him about our North Star Region and how long we have been meeting. He knew nothing of our organization. The doctor has worked and lived in our area for many years and continues to live here in retirement. He asked many questions and is very interested in health care for all. I invited him to come to one of our North Star Region meetings. I came home that day and thought about the fact that the doctor knew nothing about the Minnesota Senior Federation at the state or local level. We have articles and publish our local meeting dates and locations in all local papers. Our members also spread the word about our organization. Are we falling short of selling our great organization? I then started to call people of all ages that I have met over the years. I asked if they were aware of what the Minnesota Senior Federation does and what it stands for. I received the same answer from 90 percent of those I talked with - they knew of the organization, but not about what the Minnesota Senior Federation works on or has accomplished, or what is planned for the future. As members of the Minnesota Senior Federation, we have a large stake in what the future is to be like for our organization. There are committees, such as strategic planning and membership, which are now working on planning for the future. As members, we can start working now to help build the Minnesota Senior Federation. Here are a few minor things we can do that may have a major impact: - When you finish reading Senior News, pass it on to others.
When you attend other meetings such as church, American Legion, Eagles, VFW, union and so on, pass out our Minnesota Senior Federation brochure.
Let's get out and sell the Minnesota Senior Federation. If each member could bring in a new member - just think of the impact that would have. This year is a big election year on the federal and state level. Candidates will campaign hard this summer and fall. At some time candidates will be in your area. Take the time to go to where they will be and ask questions to which you need answers. Do not be intimidated by the office they hold or are seeking. Remember they work for you - not you for them. The Minnesota Senior Federation state convention will be held in Maple Grove Oct. 11. Remember to get your resolution in as early as possible and plan on sending a delegation from your region to the convention. |
