Cotten’s service to community elicits recognition, award PDF Print E-mail
Federation member Delores “Dee” Cotten, 86, of Minneapolis, was among ten 2006 Virginia McKnight Binger Human Service Award winners on Nov. 16 for her work in community organizing and affordable housing advocacy.  Dee is a member of the Federation’s affordable housing committee and is office manager and fundraiser at  Metropolitan Interfaith Council on Affordable Housing, which works on problems of homelessness in the Twin Cities.

After working for 40 years helping others as a nurse, financial hardships 13 years ago forced her to lose her home. Her husband had just died and she had to take care of a funeral and find a place to live. The result was that as a widow in her 70s, she lived in her car for four months.

Today, in addition to her Federation work, she is active on a wide variety of committees and boards, including the Minneapolis Senior Citizens Advisory Committee to the Mayor.

“Dee is a survivor who turned the hardship she suffered into a passion for helping others who are faced with poverty and misfortune,” said nominator Joy Sorensen Navarre.

Each Virginia McKnight Binger awardee receives $7,500.
