Counseling and Services - Tax Help

Tax season is upon us!  If you need help preparing and filing your tax return, there are a couple of free services available depending upon your income and where you live.

  1. VITA, TCE:  This free service is available nationwide to people making less than $41,000 per year.  Call this number at the IRS to find a location near you: 800/906-9887.
  2. CAPSH:  This is a free tax preparation and filing service to residents of Hennepin County suburbs who make less than $35,000 (single) / $45,000 (couple).  (CAPSH stands for Community Action Partnership of Suburban Hennepin County).  There are limited dates and times scheduled at locations throughout suburban Hennepin County, and reservations are recommended.  For information and appointments, call 952/933-9639, ext 211.

In 2009, everyone who receives Social Security, SSI, Veterans Administration, or Railroad Retirement benefits will receive an extra $250 check under the new stimulus law.  The extra $250 will be paid in May, and you will receive it the same way you normally receive your Social Security, SSI, VA, or Railroad Retirement benefits. You'll receive a letter in April to let you know that you'll be receiving the extra $250 payment.

There are no federal or state agencies who will be calling people about these checks.  If you receive a call from someone who says they're from the Social Security Administration or any other agency, and they ask for information so that they can help you get your stimulus check, it is a fraudulent call!  Hang up right away and call the Minnesota Attorney General's office.
