New health care bill looks a lot like universal health care
By Gene Taylor MnSF health action committee member
Near the end of this past session of the Minnesota legislature, new health care legislation was introduced in both houses. Chief author in the Senate was Sen. John Marty (health, housing and family security committee and health care access commission). Chief author in the House was Rep. Ken Tschumper (health and human services committee). There were 57 co-authors, indicating commitment to this effort.
The newly named Minnesota Health Care Act is primarily a universal health care/single payer system. It includes: access for everyone; free choice of doctors, hospitals, cost controls; and separation of health insurance from employment.
Hearings on this act are being scheduled throughout the state; the first one was June 12, in Mankato.
