Everyone seeking a rebate under the economic stimulus plan signed into law Feb. 13 must file a 2007 federal tax return if they want to receive a check by May or June. However, 12 million low-income seniors typically don’t file tax returns because their income is too low and they are not required by law. Couples 65 and older need to file if 2007 income exceeded $18,550. Singles need to file if their income exceeds $10,050. Seniors with at least $3,000 in qualifying income (wages, Social Security, certain vets benefits, railroad retirement) should report this income on a 1040 or 1040A for the rebate. Going to a paid tax preparer for a modest rebate may not be beneficial though. The IRS has a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program with locations in neighborhood centers, that has free tax preparation services. Call 800/906-9887 for locations. |
