April brings the Senior Federation North Star Region’s 34th Annual Convention. This year it will be held in Eveleth at the United in Christ Lutheran Church, 201 Station 44 Road on Friday, April 11. The church is just off highways 53 and 37 on the way to Gilbert. We would love to have anyone who happens to be in the neighborhood attend.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the convention convenes at 10 a.m. Cost has gone up slightly to $18 for registration including lunch. If you have gone to the grocery store lately, then you know why the cost needed to be raised. Lunch is going to be a catered turkey dinner (yes, they will be real mashed potatoes!). The ladies of the church will be taking care of coffee an’. You can contact the Virginia regional office (218/749-2912 ext. 202 or 800/662-5711 ext. 202) for more information on this important event in the North Star Regional Forum.
Under the new Standing Rules and Regulations, if adopted, we will be electing all board positions and starting next year we will elect the moderator and vice moderator one year and recorder and treasurer the next year. Also on the agenda will be area caucuses to select a representative to serve on the regional council. These people are a very important part of our organization as they take the information back to senior clubs, our “partners in mission” and let them know what is happening.
Our keynote speaker will be our own Kathleen McKinstra, attorney at law, who will give a presentation on “Common Mistakes in Estate Planning.” Kathleen is very gifted in her area of expertise and we share her with the State Board of the Minnesota Senior Federation as their vice chair.
Our forum meetings are still growing in popularity. At our March meeting Sheriff Pat Medure with the Itasca County sheriff’s office spoke on “Identity Theft and Scam Prevention.” Once more it is a very timely subject and very well received. I have learned so much from these presentations and they have made the afternoon sessions very informative.
It’s getting close to our annual June bus trip to the Kooch County Senior Center. This is a popular event. We usually have two buses and charge a nominal fee for the ride. One leaves from Grand Rapids (very early in the morning) and one from the Virginia area. If plans stay on track, the center is hoping for a boat ride on Rainy Lake for the group. Stay tuned for more information on this very fun day!
The May meeting is scheduled for the Goodland Senior Center on May 9. Muriel Pehle, regional office manager
